UCL: Barnes and Gordon fire Newcastle to victory over Benfica.

Newcastle United earned a vital UEFA Champions League victory at St James’ Park as Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon found the net in a 2–0 win over Benfica on Tuesday night.

The Magpies, determined to bounce back from their previous European setback, started brightly and controlled large spells of the game with energy and precision.

Harvey Barnes opened the scoring in the 28th minute, curling a fine effort into the far corner after being teed up by Bruno Guimarães. The goal lifted the home crowd, and Newcastle continued to press for more as Alexander Isak and Gordon kept the Benfica defense under constant pressure.

Gordon doubled the lead midway through the second half, finishing confidently after latching onto a clever through ball from Kieran Trippier.

Benfica, despite moments of promise, struggled to break down Newcastle’s solid backline marshalled by Fabian Schär and Sven Botman. Goalkeeper Nick Pope also made a crucial save late on to preserve the clean sheet.

The win puts Eddie Howe’s side in a strong position in Group F, reigniting their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Speaking after the match, Howe praised his players’ focus and intensity: “We showed great discipline and quality tonight. Barnes and Gordon were outstanding — their energy and decision-making made the difference.”
