Ghana Mourns: Gov’t Announces 3 Days of Mourning for Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

The Government of Ghana has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

The period of mourning, which begins on Friday, October 24, will see all national flags flown at half-mast across the country to commemorate her life and service to the nation.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, the government expressed profound sorrow over the loss of a woman described as “a pillar of courage, leadership, and advocacy for women’s empowerment.” The statement also noted that funeral arrangements will be announced in consultation with the Rawlings family.

Nana Konadu, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was widely celebrated for her transformative work in promoting women’s rights and social development. Through her establishment of the 31st December Women’s Movement, she helped empower thousands of women across Ghana and beyond.

President John Dramani Mahama, in a tribute, described her as “a trailblazer whose legacy of strength and service will forever inspire generations.” He added that her passing marks the end of an era in Ghana’s political and social history.

As the nation reflects on her life, messages of condolence continue to pour in from leaders, institutions, and citizens, all united in grief and gratitude for her immense contributions to national development.

Ghana mourns a visionary, a mother, and a leader whose impact will endure for generations to come.
