Music Eases Surgery and Speeds Recovery — Indian Study Finds

A new study from India has revealed that listening to music before, during, or after surgical procedures can significantly reduce patient anxiety, ease pain, and speed up recovery.

Researchers found that patients who were exposed to calming music during surgery under local or regional anaesthesia reported lower stress levels and required fewer pain medications after the procedure. The study also noted improvements in heart rate stability and overall patient satisfaction.

According to the research team, music therapy works by stimulating the brain’s relaxation pathways, helping patients feel calmer and more in control even in stressful medical environments. The soothing effect of music, they explained, can reduce the body’s stress hormones, leading to smoother surgery experiences and faster healing.

Doctors involved in the study say the findings highlight the potential of non-drug interventions in improving surgical care. They recommend integrating music therapy into hospital protocols, especially for minor and intermediate surgical operations.

The researchers also noted that the genre of music matters. Soft, slow-tempo tunes produced the most positive results, compared to fast or loud music.

Health experts say the study reinforces growing global evidence that music is not only emotionally uplifting but also medically beneficial, adding a new dimension to patient care and recovery.
