Selassie Ibrahim Calls for Fair Management of Film Development Fund

Ghanaian actress and film producer Selassie Ibrahim has called for transparent and equitable management of the Film Development Fund, stressing that fair allocation is crucial to boosting the country’s creative industry.

Speaking during an industry stakeholders’ engagement, Selassie Ibrahim noted that many filmmakers struggle to access financial support despite the fund’s existence, a challenge she believes undermines growth, innovation, and global competitiveness in Ghana’s film sector.

According to her, proper governance of the fund will not only empower established creators but also provide essential opportunities for emerging talents who lack financing to bring their ideas to life.

She emphasised that the film industry has the potential to contribute significantly to national development through job creation, cultural promotion, and tourism, but only if structures such as the fund are managed efficiently.

“We need a system that ensures every filmmaker—whether new or experienced—has equal access. Fairness and transparency are key if we want to build a thriving industry,” she stated.

Industry players at the event echoed her concerns, calling for accountability mechanisms, clear application processes, and regular reporting on how the fund is distributed and utilised.

The call comes at a time when Ghana’s film sector is seeking stronger institutional support to compete effectively on the global stage and produce high-quality content that reflects Ghanaian stories.
