All Public Universities Renamed by Akufo-Addo to Have Names Reversed – Ayariga Reveals Cabinet Decision

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed that Cabinet has taken a decision to reverse the names of all public universities that were renamed under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Speaking to the media, Mr Ayariga explained that the move forms part of the government’s efforts to restore the original identities and historical significance of these institutions, many of which were renamed after prominent individuals during the previous administration.

He stated that the affected universities would soon have their original names reinstated through legal and administrative processes.

“This decision was reached after careful consideration by the Cabinet. The renaming of these institutions created unnecessary confusion and, in some cases, disregarded the history and legacy of the universities. The government has therefore decided to restore their original names,” he noted.

The universities affected by the Akufo-Addo-era renaming exercise include:

  • The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), renamed as Kofi Abrefa Busia University of Energy and Natural Resources.

  • The University for Development Studies (UDS) campuses were split and renamed after various personalities.

  • The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and others are affected by institutional restructuring.

Mr. Ayariga added that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with Parliament, will initiate the necessary processes to give legal backing to the restoration.

He emphasised that the decision is not politically motivated but rather aimed at preserving Ghana’s educational heritage and institutional continuity.

The announcement has already generated widespread public interest, with many awaiting official confirmation and timelines for implementation.
