Award-winning Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy has weighed in on the debate over the proposed renaming of Kotoka International Airport, stating that any change must be backed by clear, nationally relevant reasons and deliver tangible benefits to the country. Speaking on the sidelines of the Africa Prosperity Dialogue in Accra on Wednesday, February 4, he noted that the facility was previously known as Accra International Airport and said he would support a renaming only if it promotes a positive national narrative and contributes to Ghana’s upliftment.
Stonebwoy also disclosed a personal connection to General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, after whom the airport is currently named, revealing that the late general hails from his hometown, Alakple. He acknowledged the complex historical discussions surrounding Kotoka’s involvement in the 1966 coup that overthrew Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, noting that such historical context continues to shape conversations about the airport’s name.
