Trump Pulls 30 Envoys in ‘America First’ Push, Critics Say It Weakens U.S. Abroad

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the withdrawal of about 30 American envoys and diplomatic representatives from key foreign postings, citing his renewed commitment to an “America First” foreign policy agenda.

According to sources familiar with the decision, the move is aimed at streamlining U.S. diplomatic operations, cutting costs, and refocusing resources on domestic priorities. Trump and his allies argue that many overseas diplomatic roles have become bloated and no longer serve core American interests.

“Our focus must be on protecting Americans at home first,” a senior adviser reportedly said, adding that the decision reflects a broader effort to reassess U.S. engagement abroad.

However, the move has sparked sharp criticism from diplomats, foreign policy experts, and opposition figures, who warn that pulling envoys from strategic regions could weaken U.S. influence, strain alliances, and create openings for rival powers such as China and Russia.

Former diplomats argue that envoys play a crucial role in crisis management, intelligence gathering, trade negotiations, and promoting democratic values. “Diplomacy is not charity; it’s a strategic investment,” one former ambassador said.

Critics also caution that the withdrawals may undermine ongoing peace efforts, security cooperation, and economic partnerships, particularly in regions facing instability.

Despite the backlash, Trump has remained firm, insisting that the United States has for too long shouldered the burden of global leadership at the expense of its own citizens.

The decision marks another significant shift in U.S. foreign policy thinking and has already triggered concern among allies, with several governments reportedly seeking clarification from Washington on the future of bilateral relations.
