President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from describing the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, as a “political prisoner.”
According to Franklin Cudjoe, such a description is misleading and risks distorting the facts surrounding Wontumi’s legal situation. He argued that the term “political prisoner” should be reserved for individuals detained solely because of their political beliefs or affiliations, not those facing legal investigations or judicial processes.
His comments come amid ongoing public and political discussions over the legal challenges involving Chairman Wontumi, with some members of the NPP alleging that the actions against him are politically motivated.
Cudjoe maintained that while every individual is entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence, political parties should avoid narratives that could undermine public confidence in the country’s legal and judicial institutions.
He further called for restraint in public commentary, urging political actors to allow the legal process to take its course without resorting to rhetoric that could inflame tensions or misinform supporters.
The remarks have sparked fresh debate on social media and within political circles, as Ghanaians continue to follow developments surrounding Chairman Wontumi’s case.
