Mahama Cuts Sod for Dualisation of Cape Coast–Takoradi Road

President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the dualisation of the 73.6-kilometre Cape Coast–Takoradi road, a major stretch of the National Route 1 and the Trans–West African Highway.

The project, part of the government’s Big Push roads initiative, aims to enhance road safety, ease congestion, and boost trade and regional integration along Ghana’s western corridor.

Construction has been divided into three lots:

  • Lot 1: Cape Coast to Kissi

  • Lot 2: Kissi to Daboase

  • Lot 3: Daboase to Takoradi Airport Roundabout

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony at Assorko Essaman in the Shama District on Tuesday, October 21, President Mahama described the Cape Coast–Takoradi stretch as a vital national route that has become severely deteriorated, leading to frequent accidents and loss of lives.

He emphasised that the dualisation project would enhance road safety, boost trade, and promote economic integration along Ghana’s western corridor and the wider West African subregion, making transportation of goods and services more efficient.
