A finance analyst has described the government’s decision to establish a Women’s Development Bank as a bold and strategic move aimed at improving access to finance and supporting the growth of women-led businesses in Ghana.
According to the analyst, the initiative has the potential to address long-standing challenges faced by many women entrepreneurs, particularly difficulties in accessing affordable credit, business support services, and financial resources needed to expand their enterprises.
Speaking on the policy, the analyst explained that women play a critical role in Ghana’s economy, especially in the informal sector, agriculture, trade, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, many continue to face barriers that limit their ability to scale their businesses.
The proposed bank, he noted, could provide tailored financial solutions, including low-interest loans, capacity-building programmes, and advisory support designed specifically for women-owned businesses.
“This is a bold step because it recognises the need for targeted financial interventions to empower women economically,” the analyst stated.
He added that the success of the initiative would depend on strong governance structures, transparency, effective loan recovery systems, and ensuring that the facility reaches women entrepreneurs across all regions of the country.
The analyst further urged stakeholders to view the Women’s Development Bank not only as a financial institution but also as a tool for promoting economic inclusion, job creation, and sustainable development.
The establishment of the bank forms part of broader efforts by the government to promote entrepreneurship and provide more opportunities for women to participate fully in economic growth.
Supporters of the initiative believe that with proper implementation, the bank could become a major catalyst for transforming women-led businesses and improving livelihoods across Ghana.
