Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has received the 2026 Democracy Cup trophy as preparations intensify for this year’s competition, while unveiling a major partnership involving English club Sunderland AFC.
The development was announced in a report published by 3News on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The partnership will provide the 2026 Democracy Cup champions with an opportunity to travel to England and play Sunderland in an international friendly, adding an international dimension to the competition. The arrangement was initially announced in November 2025 through the efforts of Primaeval Media Limited and the Office of the Speaker.
The Democracy Cup was introduced as a platform to use football to promote peace, national unity and democratic values in Ghana.
The initiative also strengthens the existing connection between Ghanaian football and Sunderland, which has previously been home to Black Stars legends including Asamoah Gyan and John Mensah.
The 2026 edition is expected to combine competitive football with civic engagement, giving participating clubs an opportunity to contribute to the broader message of democracy and national cohesion.
The partnership with Sunderland is regarded as a major incentive for the participating teams, with the eventual winner earning the opportunity to showcase Ghanaian football on an international stage.
