Ghana and Athletic Club forward Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his four-year spell with the Black Stars.
The 32-year-old made the announcement on Friday, September 11, 2026, through a statement shared on social media. His decision comes after Ghana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 1–0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32. Williams featured for 61 minutes in what became his final appearance for the national team.
Williams, who was born in Bilbao, Spain, to Ghanaian parents, switched his international allegiance to Ghana in 2022 after previously making one appearance for Spain in a friendly.
During his time with the Black Stars, he earned 28 caps and scored two goals, representing Ghana at two FIFA World Cups and one Africa Cup of Nations.
In his farewell message, Williams expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with his Ghanaian roots and represent the country at the highest level. “Ghana has given me much more than football,” Williams said, emphasising the pride he felt wearing the national colours. He added that Ghana would always remain a part of him.
The Athletic Club captain also pledged to continue supporting the Black Stars from outside the pitch.
His international retirement marks the end of a chapter that began with his Ghana debut in September 2022 and included two World Cup campaigns, culminating in Ghana’s return to the knockout stage at the 2026 tournament for the first time since 2010.
