Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has pledged a special financial reward to the Black Stars if they defeat Croatia and secure qualification for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement was made during a visit to the team’s training base in Rhode Island on Thursday, where Ibrahim Mahama joined a high-powered Ghanaian delegation to motivate the players ahead of their decisive Group L clash against Croatia.
The delegation was led by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, and included Kofi Adams and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The officials conveyed a message of encouragement from President John Dramani Mahama, urging the team to give their all in pursuit of a place in the knockout stage.
Addressing the players and technical team, Ibrahim Mahama praised head coach Carlos Queiroz for the positive impact he has made since taking charge of the national team.
“I’m very proud because you came in at a shorter time, and you’ve been able to put the boys together. Wonderful performance,” he told the Portuguese tactician.
He then challenged the players to finish the job against Croatia, promising them a generous bonus that would come directly from him should they qualify for the Round of 32.
“I have a much better bonus for you than the taxpayers because they have to go to Parliament. I don’t have to go to Parliament. Please do us proud,” Mahama said, drawing applause and laughter from the players and officials.
The pledge is expected to further boost morale within the Black Stars camp as Ghana prepares for a winner-takes-all encounter against Croatia.
Ibrahim Mahama has remained one of the national team’s strongest supporters throughout the tournament. Earlier this year, one of his companies donated US$5 million during the national fundraising campaign to support Ghana’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Black Stars head into Saturday’s final Group L fixture in a strong position after opening their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw. With four points from two matches, a victory over Croatia would guarantee Ghana a place in the Round of 32.
With government officials, corporate leaders and millions of Ghanaians rallying behind the team, the Black Stars will be aiming to secure qualification and keep their World Cup dream alive.
