The Government of Ghana is set to launch a National Seafarer Development Policy aimed at expanding employment opportunities in the maritime sector while improving the welfare and professional development of Ghanaian seafarers.
The policy is expected to provide a comprehensive framework for training, certification, and career advancement, ensuring that Ghanaian seafarers are equipped with the skills and qualifications required to compete in the global maritime industry.
The initiative also seeks to strengthen collaboration between government agencies, maritime institutions, shipping companies, and industry stakeholders to create more employment opportunities for young Ghanaians interested in pursuing careers at sea.
In addition to promoting job creation, the policy will focus on enhancing the working conditions, safety, welfare, and social protection of seafarers, in line with international maritime standards.
Government officials believe the National Seafarer Development Policy will contribute significantly to Ghana’s blue economy agenda by developing a highly skilled maritime workforce capable of supporting the country’s economic growth and increasing its competitiveness in the international shipping industry.
The policy is also expected to encourage greater investment in maritime education and training while positioning Ghana as a hub for seafarer development in the West African sub-region.
Once launched, the National Seafarer Development Policy is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing skills gaps, promoting decent employment, and advancing sustainable growth within Ghana’s maritime sector.
