Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday morning met with five New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants at his private residence in Nima, Accra, as part of efforts to promote unity and cooperation ahead of the party’s upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The closed-door meeting, described as cordial and forward-looking, brought together leading contenders in the flagbearership race for a candid discussion on maintaining harmony and upholding the values of the party during the campaign period.
In his opening remarks, former President Akufo-Addo expressed deep appreciation to the aspirants for honoring his invitation despite their busy schedules, noting that their presence reflected “a shared commitment to the future of the NPP and to Ghana’s democratic growth.”
“I have worked closely with each of you and hold you in high regard,” he stated. “As we approach the primaries, I urge you to conduct issue-based campaigns that focus on your vision for the party and the nation. The NPP must remain united and forward-looking beyond this contest.”
He further pledged his continued dedication to supporting a credible, transparent, and peaceful internal electoral process, emphasizing that party unity would be critical as the NPP positions itself for the 2028 general elections.
The five aspirants present were Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong. Each of them reportedly reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a healthy, competitive, and respectful campaign, and pledged to rally behind the eventual winner in the interest of party cohesion.
Also in attendance were senior party figures including Hon. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders; Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey, Acting National Chairman; Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary; Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader; and Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, former Chief of Staff.
Former President Akufo-Addo concluded the meeting with a call on the party’s leadership and aspirants to uphold transparency, decorum, and unity, describing these as “the foundation on which victory and progress will be built.”
