Mahama mourns victims of GAF recruitment stampede

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his sympathies to the families of the six people who died in a terrible stampede at the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

President Mahama termed the event as terribly regrettable while launching the Nkoto Nkentekete initiative in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 11, 2025, emphasising that all of the casualties were women.

He wished those being treated at the 37 Military Hospital a quick recovery and led attendees in spending a minute of silence in memory of the departed.

The President demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances behind the incident and ordered authorities to tighten safety precautions during future public recruitment drills and national events.

The stampede erupted as thousands of young Ghanaians converged on the stadium in the hopes of joining the Armed Forces. The massive throng and pushing at access points caused havoc, resulting in numerous injuries and deaths.

The Ghana Armed Forces announced that six individuals died and 28 others were taken to the 37 Military Hospital. Five of the injured remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with 12 in critical condition.

The event occurred during an extended recruitment period, which had been extended by one week beyond the original deadline of October 31, 2025, to allow applicants who encountered technical difficulties to submit their applications.
