Parliament Sets First Meeting in Ramaphosa ‘Farmgate’ Impeachment Case

South Africa’s Parliament is set to hold the first meeting of a special impeachment committee investigating allegations linked to President Cyril Ramaphosa in the controversial “Farmgate” scandal. The meeting is scheduled for Monday as impeachment proceedings against the president gain renewed momentum.

The case was revived earlier this month after South Africa’s Constitutional Court ruled that Parliament acted improperly when it blocked impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa in 2022. The scandal has remained one of the biggest controversies of his presidency.

The “Farmgate” scandal centres on a 2020 incident in which large sums of cash were reportedly stolen from furniture at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm. Questions were later raised about the origin of the money and why it was allegedly concealed in a sofa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has consistently denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the money came from a legitimate buffalo sale. He has also filed a legal challenge against findings by an independent panel that suggested there may have been evidence of misconduct.

According to reports, the 31-member parliamentary committee will first elect its chairperson before proceeding with the investigation. The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) has opposed the idea of a member of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) chairing the committee.

Although the impeachment process is moving forward, analysts believe it may be difficult to remove the president from office because the ANC still controls a significant number of seats in Parliament. A two-thirds majority vote would be required for impeachment to succeed.

The development has intensified political tensions in South Africa, with opposition parties demanding accountability while Ramaphosa’s supporters continue to defend his leadership amid the ongoing legal and political battle.
