The Ghana Police Service has arrested another TikTok content creator over allegations of making offensive and false statements targeting President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama, marking the latest in a series of crackdowns on unlawful social media content.
According to police, the suspect was apprehended following an intelligence-led operation after investigators intercepted videos allegedly containing insulting remarks, threats, and false claims directed at the President and the First Lady. Authorities said the content was considered capable of disturbing public peace and undermining national cohesion.
The arrest comes just days after 43-year-old TikToker Camilla Alhassan was sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court to one year in prison with hard labour after pleading guilty to offensive conduct. Prosecutors told the court that she made derogatory comments about President Mahama and his wife in a TikTok video, prompting a police investigation that led to her arrest.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated that while the 1992 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, that right must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law. The Service warned that social media should not be used to spread false information, issue threats, or publish unlawful content, stressing that offenders will face the full rigours of the law.
The latest arrest adds to a growing list of social media personalities who have faced legal action this year over content deemed offensive or threatening to public officials. The developments have sparked public debate over the balance between freedom of speech and the enforcement of laws governing online conduct in Ghana.
