The Office of the Attorney-General has opposed a bail application filed by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, pending the hearing and determination of his appeal against his conviction and sentence.
In its opposition, the Attorney-General argued that Wontumi poses a significant flight risk and urged the court to reject the bail application.
The State also reportedly contends that Wontumi’s appeal has no reasonable chance of success, arguing that there are no special circumstances to justify granting him bail pending the appeal.
Wontumi’s lawyers had applied for bail following his 20-year prison sentence in connection with the illegal mining case involving activities at Samreboi.
The court is expected to consider arguments from both sides before determining whether the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman should be granted bail pending his appeal.
The case continues to attract significant public and political attention as the legal battle over Wontumi’s conviction moves to the next stage.
