Free Primary Healthcare to Be Rolled Out in Phases, Starting with 150 Deprived Districts – Health Minister

The government has announced plans to roll out free primary healthcare services nationwide in phases, starting with 150 of the most deprived districts.

According to the Minister of Health in Ghana, the Ministry of Health in Ghana, the initiative aims to improve access to essential healthcare services, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations.

The Minister explained that the phased approach will allow authorities to effectively manage resources, monitor implementation, and address challenges before expanding the programme nationwide.

The policy is expected to cover basic healthcare services, including outpatient care, maternal and child health services, and treatment for common illnesses. It forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and reduce financial barriers to accessing medical care.

Health officials say prioritising deprived districts will help bridge the gap in healthcare delivery and ensure that communities with the greatest needs receive immediate support.

The initiative has been welcomed by stakeholders in the health sector, who believe it could significantly improve health outcomes and reduce preventable diseases if successfully implemented.

Authorities have assured the public of their commitment to ensuring a smooth rollout, with plans to gradually extend the programme to all districts across the country.
